Pretty Sure The Activists Marching In Chicago Just Wanted Deep Dish Pizza

Hey folks, you know what’s missing from a run-of-the-mill Democratic convention? An absolutely magnetic sea of activists descending upon Chicago to demand a ceasefire in Gaza. Yep, nothing says “We could actually change things but will definitely get distracted by porta-potty logistics” quite like it.

Thousands of activists. I’ve seen less enthusiasm from a kid who’s just discovered their Halloween haul was mostly candy corn. Now, don’t get me wrong, the cause is undeniably substantial, but packing the politically-heated thrills of Gaza into the ever-so-enigmatic Windy City? That’s like putting a firecracker in a hotdog and calling it the 4th of July.

But what’s the deal with political conventions in general? I swear if you’ve been to one, you’ve been to them all. They come with the same generic decorum and almost guaranteed awkward mascot costumes that make the Macy’s Parade look like a spiritual journey. Adding thousands of passionate activists to protest is like trying to put out a forest fire with a garden hose… while riding a unicycle… in hell. Their message already has all the subtlety of a Michael Bay film, but combined with a roomful of people who can’t decide between kale salad and bottled water, it’s a full-on circus.

I mean, only in 2024 can you have progress and chaos dance together like they just met on Tinder. Convention delegates huddled over their soy lattes, discussing resolutions, while outside, activists are using megaphones like motivational speakers at a dying used-car lot. You want to create change? You need both a voice and an audience that’ll actually listen — two things rarer than a unicorn at a country-western bar.

Gaza. It’s a topic more delicate than a Fabergé egg but with the allure of a reality TV showdown. The news reports enough bombshells to make an episode of Jersey Shore look humble. Yet, trying to reel in public sympathy for a Gaza ceasefire in the heart of Chicago’s Democratic festivity is an absolute masterstroke in logistical ineptitude. That kind of inconsistency is akin to mixing Red Bull and chamomile tea – all hype, zero sense.

Now, forgive me for imagining this, but how does one begin to negotiate a ceasefire in a land plagued by endless historical conflict, over lots of cheesy pizza, and deep-dish discussions? It’s tough to get up in arms about a serious geopolitical issue when you can’t figure out why anyone would prefer a Kanye playlist during dinner. And let’s be real, where there are activists, there’s chanting. America’s Next Top Mantra.

Picture it: thousands of people yelling out all sorts of slogans while Chicagoans attempt to discern if ‘More Humus’ is a political stance or a new food truck down the street. It’s organized resistance doing the macarena with urban pacifism.

The whole city morphs into a loud, sweating bombastic mess, like an accordion-filled concert happening inside a metal trash can. And the stairwell politics? Oh, we all know those – campaigners balancing out talking about healthcare with a Churro in one hand and a vegan pamphlet in the other.

Also, what’s with the ironic twist of using megaphones when literally everyone is already talking on their phones? It’s like using a typewriter to send an email. Political activism may be about raising voices, but with these kids, it’s more like raising decibels to the point where your eardrums file for divorce.

But I digress. While Chicago hosts an official quorum of people who might actually have the power to change policy, you’ve got activists outside looking like contestants on The Price is Right, hoping to win showcase showdown for peace. Guess right, and there’s a ceasefire; guess wrong, and you’re sent home with a year’s worth of Rice-A-Roni.

Look, I totally understand, the current state of the world’s affairs requires the thick-skinned resolve of a rhino on Adderall. However, there’s a difference between showing up for change and turning cities into what looks and sounds like a Def Leppard concert… if Def Leppard were trying to get you to sign a petition.

In conclusion, if you’re going to rock the boat, do it right. Thread the needle between activism and pragmatism. Do one thing: get people to listen. Because whether it’s Gaza or Gotham, a convention full of perfumed platitudes won’t step up your game. Make it loud but make it clear – make it count like it’s the last decent cup of coffee in the world.
