In my usual, understated manner, let me suggest, if you’re hellbent on securing a future filled with democracy and decent human beings, might we consider an idea? Perhaps instilling critical thinking in schools. I know, it’s a radical notion – educating our youth to evaluate information critically rather than being spoon-fed a diet of sensationalism. They may actually become immune to the siren calls of extreme ideologies. So, let’s keep the curriculum more ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and less ‘How to Kill Democracy.’
Then, when they’re old enough to vote, they might just be capable of seeing a riot for what it is – not a patriotic excursion, but rather a criminal activity that disrupts the very foundation of their republic.
