The Pentagon thanked Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia for 32 years of service, then retracted the statement. Apparently “thank you for your service” now comes with undo-send.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth fired Sylvia, who was coordinating the Iran battle plan, CBS News reports. No replacement has been named. This leaves the Pentagon searching for a military planner while demonstrating that it could also use someone to plan a farewell announcement.
A Pentagon official alleged Sylvia leaked classified information. Two other Pentagon sources disputed the leak accusations. The matter has been referred to the Justice Department; an accusation is not a finding of guilt. The Joint Staff, meanwhile, decided its initial “deepest gratitude” did not fit the full circumstances.
Trump is weighing renewed strikes on Iran after the midterms. Sylvia is the second general removed from this planning post during Hegseth’s tenure.
The thank-you note has been neutralized. The planning vacancy remains.
