The public is permitted to admire the troops. Asking what their political leadership is discussing requires a separate level of clearance, apparently above that needed to supply the troops.
Axios reports that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met Benjamin Netanyahu during an unannounced visit to Israel on Monday. The meeting came eight days before Israel's election and amid American-Israeli discussions about potentially resuming major combat in Iran.
Those are consequential surroundings for a visit. They are not proof that the meeting served an electoral purpose, or that any decision to resume combat was made. The distinction should be preserved. It would be easier to preserve it in a well-informed public conversation if the officials involved supplied more of one.
According to Axios's sources, the meeting took place at Ovda Air Base, where American refueling planes and fighter jets are deployed. Hegseth also met American troops there, one source said. He later posted an image of himself visiting troops in the region.
A photograph is a highly disciplined form of disclosure. It can establish that the secretary stood somewhere without troubling the audience with what he intended to accomplish there. Every visible person may be perfectly in focus while the public purpose remains artistically blurred.

There are legitimate reasons not to broadcast sensitive military discussions. Nobody needs a live feed of operational planning. But that does not make every request for political explanation an application to inspect the targeting coordinates. What a government is considering, why it is considering it and how it accounts for the consequences are not questions that become indecent because a uniform has entered the frame.
Axios reported that the Pentagon and Israeli embassy declined to comment; Netanyahu's office did not immediately respond. That describes the response to this reporting, not an eternal refusal to explain. For now, however, the visual record is enjoying a considerable lead over the public account.
The limits of reassuring language about Ukraine raised a related distinction between presenting a posture and explaining what follows from it. A troop photograph is not worthless. It is simply very poorly equipped to answer questions about a possible expansion of war.
Respect for service members ought to make those questions more urgent, not less presentable. They are the people who may have to perform the decisions that civilians are invited to regard as too sensitive to discuss.
The camera can record a visit beautifully. It cannot take responsibility for one. Until the officials provide that part, there is little reason to let a well-composed image stand in for a well-explained decision.
