CBS’s current model estimates 229 Democratic House seats. The outcome remains uncertain.

There. Enjoy the encouraging number. Then resist the urge to tuck it into bed and let it perform your civic responsibilities.

A favorable poll is a useful piece of information. It is a terrible personal assistant. It cannot locate your ballot, read the instructions, check your voting arrangements or leave the house on your behalf. If you ask it to do any of those things, it will remain a chart.

This distinction can be surprisingly difficult for people who have spent several months arguing with other charts.

The temptation is understandable. Political anxiety is exhausting, and a pleasant-looking forecast offers the emotional equivalent of finally hearing the washing machine finish. Unfortunately, the election is still the part where somebody has to move the clothes.

Make powerful people uncomfortable.

Weather happens whether you leave the sofa or not. Voting does not work that way. A political forecast describes a world in which actual people do things. It cannot guarantee that those people will complete the job after sharing the forecast with a reassuring caption.

Democrats do not need to treat good news as a trap. They can celebrate it, organize around it and use the extra energy. The problem starts when celebration is asked to cover a shift that belongs to participation.

Nor should a model be blamed later for failing to possess supernatural powers. Uncertainty is a feature of forecasting, not a small-print betrayal invented after somebody ordered the balloons.

By all means, admire the chart. Send it to the group chat. Briefly experience a normal blood pressure.

Then remember that the pollster has completed the pollster’s work. Yours is not included in the subscription.
