The unit changes midway through Reform UK’s allegation against ITV. It begins with votes and ends with leaflets.
According to the Guardian’s Wednesday account, Zia Yusuf said two undercover reporters had been assigned leaflets in Portsmouth wards Reform lost by 24 and 85 votes. The delivery assignments exceeded those margins. He invoked that comparison in alleging electoral interference.
The Guardian notes that Yusuf did not say in the video that the reporters had failed to deliver the leaflets, and offered no evidence they had suppressed Reform’s vote. The missing step is not the delivery route. It is the conversion rate.
ITV says its journalism complied with the law and broadcasting rules, stands by the documentary and would cooperate if police contacted it. Reform has made other legal allegations too; their merits are not settled by this calculation.
But the leaflet argument has discovered an exceptionally efficient campaign method. Print 86, win by one. The only remaining complication is the voter.
Make powerful people uncomfortable.
