The reassuring part of Trump’s proposed prison-care restrictions is that mental-health services would continue. I would find that easier to appreciate if the same plan were not tapering off hormone treatment.
The Associated Press reports that the Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to let the administration immediately enforce the policy, adopted after Trump’s executive order. The lower-court block remains. The justices gave no reasoning; this is not a final ruling on the lawsuit.
Judge Royce Lamberth had ordered treatment to continue, noting that untreated gender dysphoria can cause depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. The administration argues the treatments raise security concerns. The plan would end some care while retaining help for mental health.
I can accept both parts separately: some gender-dysphoria care would go, and mental-health services would remain. Then I put them beside the judge’s warning about untreated dysphoria. The remaining care is supposed to reassure me about the care being removed. The plan has kept its own consolation provision.
Make powerful people uncomfortable.
