Utah says an undercover law-enforcement officer placed sports bets on Kalshi. This is probably not the customer-engagement story the sales team wanted.
The state has now charged Kalshi and its two cofounders with 14 counts involving alleged gambling promotion and a pattern of unlawful activity, Reuters reports. These are charges, not convictions.
The timing is excellent if you enjoy paying lawyers. A day earlier, the Trump administration’s Commodity Futures Trading Commission sued to stop Utah enforcing its gambling laws against prediction markets, arguing that federal regulators have jurisdiction. Utah has already won a federal ruling allowing enforcement. The larger state-versus-federal fight remains unresolved.
Kalshi calls the charges a “crazy overreach,” says Utah is playing politics and expects to stop the case in court. Meanwhile, the undercover customer’s feedback has reached the prosecutors.
The next satisfaction survey may need an option between five stars and prosecution.
