The Potter County Republican Party wants all machine-cast paper ballots counted by hand as a condition of certifying election results. Its lawsuit warns about artificial intelligence and foreign adversaries without providing proof, the Texas Tribune reports.
We have reached the stage of election security where the ballots must each be checked individually, but the frightening claims can go through unsupervised.
Texas already requires a hand count of a portion of paper ballots to check machine totals. The lawsuit wants all of them. Somewhere between checking the calculator and interrogating every number, this has become a plan to keep election workers employed until the machines qualify for retirement.
Certification follows the checks and is mandatory under state law. Officials are told they shall certify the results. Not shall, unless a county party has been reading something alarming about China.
The lawsuit seeks that condition; it has not made it law. The paper ballots are available for inspection. The evidence of the sinister plot is still on back order.
