Donald Trump has offered South Carolina an exciting shortcut to evaluating a Senate candidate: check the family tree.

Campaigning Thursday for Darline Graham, sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, Trump praised her brother’s political ability and declared, “She’s got the gene.” Excellent. We can replace the candidate forum with a cheek swab.

Graham was appointed in July after her brother’s death and became the Republican nominee in August. Now she faces Democrat Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, in a competitive race. The hereditary part has unfortunately encountered an election.

Trump also told her, “I got you into this thing, Darline.” So the gene apparently needed a recommendation from the president. Even DNA can’t get a job without connections anymore.

Andrews is offering a less biological arrangement: elect her, and if voters dislike her performance, they can fire her in six years. A job with a review date. Practically radical.

One voter told AP that the Senate isn’t an inherited position. Useful clarification. On Tuesday, South Carolinians will choose a senator, not decide who gets the good china.
